Gross services volume (GSV) is the total amount clients paid through Upwork in a period, including Upwork's fees on both sides, before Upwork's own revenue is separated out.
GSV is the marketplace's top line: every dollar a client paid a freelancer or agency through Upwork, plus the fees Upwork charged on those payments, plus the value of Enterprise and managed-service contracts billed through the platform. It is the equivalent of gross merchandise volume for an e-commerce marketplace. Upwork Inc. states it in every quarterly earnings release as a key business metric; it is not a GAAP figure and does not appear in the audited income statement, where only Upwork's revenue is recorded.
Two ratios come from it. Revenue divided by GSV is the take rate, Upwork's share of each client dollar. GSV divided by active clients, which Upwork also reports, is spend per client over the trailing twelve months, the figure that shows whether the marketplace is growing by adding clients or by serving fewer, larger ones.
For agencies GSV is the size of the pool they compete in. It cannot be split between freelancers and agencies from the filings, because Upwork does not break it out that way.
How Upwork Insights uses it
Upwork reported GSV of $966.4M for Q2 2026, down 3.6% year on year, and $3.99B over the trailing four quarters. The Pulse page charts every quarter from the filings and the GSV stat page explains the latest figure.
For scale, the 25,139 agencies in this index show $3.11B of lifetime earnings between them as of Oct 30, 2026, accumulated over many years of that volume.
