An Upwork agency is a business account on Upwork, run by an owner or business manager, through which a team of freelancers bids on and delivers work under one profile, one Job Success Score and one earnings record.
Upwork lets any freelancer create an agency and invite others to it. The agency gets its own public page at upwork.com/agencies, listed in Upwork's agency directory under one or more categories, with a name, description, team size bracket, hourly rate range, skills, services and, like a freelancer profile, a running total of earnings, jobs and billed hours. Contracts can be signed with the agency rather than with an individual, and the agency's owner or business manager submits proposals on the team's behalf and decides who does the work.
Members can be exclusive, working on Upwork only through the agency, or non-exclusive, keeping their own freelancer profile as well. Earnings from agency contracts accrue to the agency's total and to its Job Success Score, which is why an agency's figures differ from the sum of its members' profiles. Agencies can hold the Top Rated and Top Rated Plus badges in their own right.
Upwork does not publish how many agencies exist or how much of its gross services volume flows through them; the directory is the only public view of the agency side of the marketplace.
How Upwork Insights uses it
Upwork Insights indexes 25,139 agencies as of Oct 30, 2026, read from all 89 directory categories and spanning 147 countries, and ranks them by the figures on their public pages. Only agencies showing lifetime earnings above $0 enter the index; between them they show $3.11B earned and 1,277,915 jobs. The agency-count stat page explains the number and the methodology what is read from each page.
