The Job Success Score (JSS) is Upwork's 0–100% measure of a freelancer's or agency's record of successful contracts, calculated from client feedback on work completed over the past 24 months.
Upwork computes the score from public and private client feedback, weighted by the size and length of each contract, so one large unhappy client moves it more than several small happy ones. Contracts that end with no feedback, or that sit idle with no payment for a long time, can count against it. Long-term relationships and repeat clients count in its favour. The score updates every two weeks and is only shown once a profile has enough completed work in the window; a new agency has no JSS at all, which is not the same as a low one.
Two thresholds matter. A score of 90% or higher is one of the requirements for the Top Rated and Top Rated Plus badges. A score that falls below roughly 80% makes the profile hard to hire from, because clients filter on it. Because the window is 24 months, an agency that stops taking contracts keeps its score for a while and then loses it, so an absent score often means inactivity rather than poor work.
The JSS is not an average star rating: Upwork publishes the result, not the formula, and private feedback that the client never sees on the profile is part of it. An agency's score is its own, separate from the scores of the freelancers in it.
How Upwork Insights uses it
Upwork Insights reads the score from each agency's public page at observation time. Of the 25,139 agencies indexed as of Oct 30, 2026, 8,896 (35%) have a score; 8,090 sit at 90% or above and 7,282 at 100%. The median among rated agencies is 100%.
In the Index Score the JSS is the quality component, worth 20 of 100 points; unrated agencies sit at half. The ranking can be sorted by JSS, and every category and country page states its median.
