Earnings here are the lifetime "total earned" figure Upwork prints on every agency's public page, summed and sorted. The distribution is a long tail with a sharp head: 58% of agencies have earned under $10K, the top 10% start at $198K, and the top 1% at $1.95M. 559 agencies have crossed $1M in lifetime earnings.
The top agency by lifetime earnings is smartData Inc Agency with $74.3M. The top ten together have earned $312.2M, which is 10% of everything earned by all 25,139 agencies. The full ranking is on the agencies page.
Averages mislead here. The mean is $124K per agency, roughly 24 times the median, because a few hundred agencies account for most of the money. Across the index Upwork shows 1,277,915 completed jobs and 129,606,513 billed hours, which works out to about $2.4K per job.
Lifetime earnings say nothing about current pace: an agency that earned $5M in 2016 and nothing since shows the same figure as one earning $5M this year. That is why no page here prints an estimated monthly revenue. Instead every agency page is re-read, and a measured run-rate appears once two observations at least 14 days apart exist.
